Map 12. The Maxwell Land Grant—nearly 1.5 million acres—became one of the largest land frauds in U.S. history. Through legal maneuvering and federal enforcement, settlers were stripped of land they had worked and occupied for decades. Violence, including the Stonewall Massacre, enforced these outcomes. The McNeil Ranch lay within this disputed territory.
